What does the term "electrosmog" mean?

The term "electrosmog" is derived from the artificial word "smog", which is made up of the two words "smoke" and "fog". It is often used when talking about the totality of electromagnetic fields caused by people - that is, electricity, radio, television, telecommunications, etc.

Although the term is used extremely often, it gives people a false image of electromagnetic fields. The term smog describes a phenomenon of air pollution that arises particularly in towns with a large amount of industry under certain weather conditions and presents a danger for humans who breathe in the air. The phenomena summarized under the term electrosmog have nothing to do with either the weather or with smoke and fog. Whereas smog spreads diffusely, the effect of electromagnetic fields decreases considerably the further away you are from the transmitter or cable.

Electrosmog is closer than you think

What is closer than our skin? We do not like to “risk our hide”, we prefer to “save our (own) skin”. The skin is the largest sensory organ and the first kidney during evolution. Skin can wear hair, feathers, scales or anything else, which proves to be useful in optimizing the loss of water and warmth. The leaves of plants have a skin coated with fat, which is able to assimilate the water of life directly.

Skin belongs neither to the inner world nor to the outer one but connects both worlds in a sensible way.

Humans, who grow no more fur because they spent a couple of million years in the water of shoreline regions in paradise, had to invent clothing in order to conquer the harsh north, successfully settling there against their inborn nature. To accomplish that they put the skin of their prey on. First, they clothed themselves in fur, later in wool and feathers. If you do not believe in feathers, you should know that there are women in Russia who knit feathers into a delicate fabric, which outstrips wool (Puchowi izgotovleno iz pucha – made from down feathers).

First, modern technology invented artificial silk, also called viscose or cellulose acetate. Those are textiles, made from “refined” natural fibers. After that there was nylon, perlon , wolpryla, PVC, teflon, polyacryl, polyethylene, and polyester. Apart from the easy manufacturing process and convenient usage, synthetic fibers could not drive out natural fibers from their leading position. How come? What is different in nature? Natural fabrics do not become as easily electrically charged. They hardly accumulate static electricity. They do not create electrosmog on our skin and therefore feel much better - without an “extra charge”.

Is there anybody who has not yet received a shock when touching metal parts while getting out of a car? Nature is superior to human attempts of fiber-making. Nature knows how to create a basic substance that is compatible with biological systems. At least half of the final fiber needs to be made out of dense water. It is hidden in such a way that you usually do not see it in a cuddly fur, in which wise mother nature hid a lot of this stuff. How about heating the fur up to 200 degrees centigrade. Wow! Now, you will see the water escaping.

However, natural fabrics can also carry substantial amounts of static electricity. I did my first experiment on electrostatic discharges in the form of lightning on newspaper (wood fibers). First, I pressed it against a masonry heater and brushed it vigorously. Probably I even brushed it against its grain, causing the newspaper to become highly charged and crackling with many an angry lightning upon removal. Yes, you got it right. I had dried the newspaper thoroughly, that is, dehydrated, by pressing it against the warm masonry heater.

Despite its immense water content, natural fabric is even flammable. Synthetic fabrics can easily become charged. Everybody knows that. Many people do not tolerate those synthetic fabrics. My wife can also tell a story or two, which made me think of electrosmog being so close (or clothes???).

In my report on electrosmog I somehow forgot to mention this important topic. Why roam far away when we can see that this bad thing is so close to us. I excuse myself and encourage you to spread the truth.

Anybody should be concerned with electrosmog. Show your knowledge. We need a beautiful, water-rich second skin. Show the synthetic fiber manufacturers the door and demand from them to produce fabrics made from dense water, just like nature has been doing it since the beginning of time.

Beware of Electrosmog

Salzgitter ( Germany ): You cannot see it or smell it, but many experts fear that electrosmog could be damaging our health.

Despite its misleading name, electrosmog has nothing to do with the kind of pollution that fills many cities each summer. It is “the possible effect on health from electric, magnetic or electromagnetic fields” from electronic devices, explained Olaf Schulz of the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection here in northern Germany .

The experts said there are two forms of this radiation: low frequency electric and magnetic fields given off by washing machines, vacuum cleaners and dish washers, and high frequency electro-magnetic fields that radiate from mobile phones.

Joachim Gertenbach of the German Federal Association Against Electrosmog, based in Wuppertal , claims: “devices create electro-magnetic fields which can result in headaches, lack of concentration, allergies or immune weakness in people who are electro-sensitive.”

He warns of possible “long-term damaging effects” of electro-magnetic radiation”. Some experts believe it can cause cancer, although there is no scientific proof for this.

But Schulz said there is enough “existing scientific uncertainty” to exercise caution, and he recommends “avoiding unnecessary high fields”. – dpa

Electrosmog – Reality or fantasy?

Electrosmog is the convergence of electromagnetic radiation which, from the lowest frequencies to the highest, surrounds us and, coming either from natural or artificial sources, bathes us in a stream of radiation, which we not only live with, but have become accustomed to. The spectrum of electrosmog covers the non-ionizing electromagnetic effects only. At the top of the spectrum is just under the domain of ultra-violet light, while the bottom could be even the static field. Electrosmog is too weak to produce any sort of ions or ionizing effect within the body, their effects being manifested in other ways.

Electrosmog poses a new challenge in the on-going history of environmental pollution. While this is the sort of environmental pollution, which is imperceptible to biological systems, these interactions are still capable of disrupting those systems' inner orders and coherent, metabolic processes. However, positive biological effects are also observed, stimulating the viability of various bio-systems.

Electromagnetic interactions are an extraordinarily fundamental phenomenon on the Earth and in Earth-bound systems. Maxwell equations serve as the basic description for these interactions as, in their compact form, they summarize the behavior of the vectors belonging to these interactions' two types of fields – electric- and magnetic-field strengths.

A definite chemical balance defines the biological functions, which deal with the construction - or, rather, combustion - of organic materials. This balance falls between the categories of solar energy and the energy released during life processes. In essence, the chemical reactions on both sides (be they the generation of organic material or its combustion) take place through the unambiguous agency of electromagnetic interactions.

The biological system creates a balance between nutrients and end-products, which breaks down the energy stored in chemical bonds in the nutrients and creates end-products in which the chemically stored energy is low. At the same time, certain biological systems (plants) are capable of executing this process in the reverse, for which they receive their energy from solar source electromagnetic radiation. In essence, in both types of process, charges flow from one location to the other, since the change in the chemical bonds is also that of the electrons' state. Charge-transfer is guided by internal electromagnetic fields, and could be could be affected by external sources as well.

On this basis, the effects of electrosmog can be, in essence, divided into two fundamentally different categories: passive electrosmog effects (acting on the nutrition which are incorporated by humans) and active electrosmog effects (effective directly to the human body).

In order to be able to pick up these electromagnetic fields, we need an antenna. Any living object including the human body is an antenna, selecting and absorbing from the surrounding electrosmog. Moreover, we are wearing various metallic and non-metallic accessories (jewelers, clothes, implants, etc.), which could serve as additional antenna to “receive” the radiation.

In our present article, we would attempt to give a summary of electrosmog's human biological effects.

Very important

1. Water in human and biological cells has a very strong dipole and therefore has a strong interaction to water elsewhere (contractile membrane).

2. Normal ice has a weak dipole and therefore no interaction to microwaves.

3. That water however has a strong interaction to microwaves is well known because microwave heaters dry very intensively. Microwaves feel water everywhere.

4. Pulsing is of special damage because radiation increases very steeply. Accelerated forces are most powerful. The biological rhythm which is accelerated in stress times is disturbed.

5. Radiation is very unequal and especial high in such called radiation cudgels.

6. There is no threshold of reaction in living entities. For instance light of only one quantum still can be seen by an eye adapted to dark.

7. All radiation also of radioactive kind has a latent period. The effects cannot be seen at once, objects given radiation recently and objects not given radiation cannot be differed from each other if the latent period is not exceeded.

8. Very well documented are effects of radiation to trees near towers for mobile radiation. I name Mayerhofer, Dr. Volkrodt, Lauber, Thule in Greenland and many more.

9. Mr. Mayerhofer could save an oak by grounding, that means by taking the electrostatic load from it.

10. Amino acid chains have the strongest Piezo constants. In one of them consisting of pure glutamin this constant was more than double as high as in quartz.

Italy threatens to pull plug on Pope's speeches unless 'electrosmog' is cut

AN UNPRECEDENTED ecological battle between the Vatican and Italy heated up yesterday when the Italian environment minister, Willer Bordon, threatened to cut off the electricity supply to Vatican Radio.

Vatican Radio, which has been charged with breaking Italian laws on electromagnetic levels, said it was astonished by the threat, which would effectively pull the plug on the station that broadcasts Pope John Paul's words around the world.

"If within 15 days the broadcaster does not get back down under the limits, I will order the national electricity provider to suspend supply to the transmission centres," Mr Bordon said at a news conference.

"If the supplier continued to provide electricity, it too would be held responsible for committing a crime," he added.

Vatican Radio broadcasts papal speeches and events to the world in some 40 languages from a huge forest of antennae north of Rome where some groups have reported abnormally high levels of cancer. The transmission centre, as with the Vatican City enclave in the centre of Rome , is on extra-territorial land and considered part of a sovereign state.

Mr Bordon said the National Agency for the Protection of the Environment had registered three times Italy 's legal limit of electromagnetism during one of Vatican Radio's evening broadcasts.

Italy has slapped strict regulations on emission levels - the tightest in the European Union - long after Vatican Radio had been set up 44 years ago. The land was once open countryside but has been heavily built up with housing and factories.

"Vatican Radio is very open to collaborating [with Italy ] but the right and just way to deal with the problem is in the commission we've set up," the station's programme director, Father Federico Lombardi, said.

Representatives from Italy and the Vatican have set up a group to deal with the problem of polluting airwaves, dubbed "electrosmog".

The main stumbling block for Italy is how to force the Vatican , a sovereign state, to comply with its national laws.

Earlier this week, a judge suspended a court case dealing with the Vatican Radio charges over a technicality of how three of its employees - a cardinal, a priest and a technician - were told they were being investigated by Italy .

Mr Bordon said too much was being made of the so-called extraterritorial question and that the only issue on the table was the health of people living in the vicinity of the antenna field.

According to the national consumer group Codacons, a health agency found more children living near the antennae had contracted leukaemia than in other parts of the capital.

"If someone threw something out of an embassy window like a fridge and hurt a citizen of the host country, that would be a problem you just can't ignore. You would do everything you

could to protect people underneath," Mr Bordon said. - Reuters

Sources - Avoidance - Remedies

Anywhere technical implements or supply lines are under electrical tension, fields of alternating induction are created as soon as electric current flows. Nowadays high frequency fields of induction exist everywhere, it is almost impossible to screen these fields off and to avoid them is becoming more and more difficult.

There are many sources which cause such induction fields. Any electrical domestic implement within your own household emits its own field of induction while in use. These fields vary in strength as well as in different ranges of frequencies. In additional to this, there are varying fields of induction stemming from the environment such as high tension power lines, transformer stations, electrical installations on the roof of your house, electrical connections to the house, large technical installations, as well as weather-dependent radiation (Sferics) and radiation caused by radio waves, television, telephones etc.

The effect of this influence depends on the nature of different kinds of fields (electric or magnetic fields where one has to differentiate between DC - fields, analogous alternating fields, digital alternating fields and impulse digital alternating fields), the field strength (in volts per metre [V/m] Nano-Teslar [nT], respectively; the frequency (16 2/3 Hz, 50 Hz, high frequency), the direction of the body towards the field and the time of exposure (few minutes, the whole day, during the sleep phase, etc.)

Health

At present very little is known and concrete hundred percent proof is yet to be established about the effects of electrosmog on human health. Studies done on the general public or specific occupational groups are mostly empirical. Therefore, since concrete and hundred percent proof, due to the lack of absolutely clean and repeatable clinical tests excluding all contaminating unavoidable "Dirty Side Influences", cannot be presented as yet, all these findings can be challenged. All tests involving the population at large and specific occupational groups were and are mostly done under the empirical principle. The problem manifests itself during clinical tests as well as from our own experience during examinations, measuring tests and consultations with our customers: while some of those examined are quite insensitive, showing no reactions whatsoever, (or are "thick skinned" as one might say) there are others, who react to a reduction of electric fields remarkably well by an improvement of their condition of health, even to the point of a complete recovery from symptoms caused by the influence of electrosmog, achieving a disappearance of all maladies suffered before action was taken to eliminate electrosmog from their immediate environment.

After a compilation of all studies, one can say that electrosmog causes a very high risk to human beings exposed to it. The risk of contracting cancer as well as to suffer from psychological ailments increases. It is rather remarkable that relatively low intensity fields (as from 100 nT), which cause no harm during a short term exposure, will become dangerous if such fields permanently exist in the vicinity.

From experience gathered over many years, working with relaxation and meditation groups, aimed at the reduction of stress syndromes, I found that such a reduction of stress improves and plays an important role to strengthen the individuals' resistance through a build-up of a deep inner relaxation of tension. (This goes as well to achieve a higher resistance to very low doses of various other every day environmental toxins).

All these findings should not lead us to believe that there are not individuals, where it has been proven beyond any doubt, that due to the interaction of different environmental conditions such as electrosmog have become seriously ill. Unfortunately, at present, there are no real efforts being made, either from the side of natural healers or from the traditional scientific medical profession to effectively help such people.

The Origins

When searching through your household to find the originators of electrosmog you should do this in several directions. First of all look for consumers of high energy flow such as water heaters, pressing irons, electrical room heating radiators, etc. then look for utensils being used very close to the body such as hair dryers, electric shavers, micro wave ovens, mobile telephones, etc.

Finally, look at consumers with a very low energy consumption, which however are powered by tension adapters (mini transformers) such as radio alarm clocks battery chargers, etc.

As a general rule you should remember that the more of such consumers are run at the same time and the longer your body is exposed to such units, the more critical it becomes and the more seriously such units should be evaluated.

Here are some examples: (the appliances currently present in your household may differ substantially from the stated values), that you may find in an assumed household:

- You may use your hair dryer once every day for a period of 10 minutes very close to your head. The field strength of such a hair dryer lies electrically at about 180V/m and magnetically at about 2000 nT.- The electric shaver, used once or twice a day causes an electric alternating field of 220 V/m and a magnetic alternating of 4500 nT to your head. - the electric radio alarm clock placed at the headboard of your bed causes, depending on the distance to your head, a field with a strength of 10 to 200 V/m and 200 to 25.000 nT to your head and this for six to ten hours every day.

- When using your electric cooker you expose your lower abdomen to fields up to 230 V/m and more than 1000 nT, measured at the level of the operating buttons of your range. If your run your microwave oven at the same time an additional 6000 nT and 200 V/m (and some millivolt high-frequency) must be added.

- The halogen lamps on your ceiling (especially those which are suspended by current carrying wires) cause, depending the distance to the transformer, up to 200 V/m and 30 to 30000 nT.

- The fluorescent tubes and display coolers in the supermarket under your flat produce fields reaching up to 300 nT in the whole of your flat and this for 24 hours every day. The high tension line, passing your house at a distance of 200 m causes, depending on the load carried, a field of 10 to 120 nT inside your living rooms and bedrooms, this, however, all around the clock.

This list could be continued ad infinitum, especially when adding all the times spent in your car, in trams or railway carriages, at your place of work etc. You should try at some time to make a protocol, taking into consideration all the above mentioned points and you will be surprised at the result.

Cure and Prevention

It is important to realise that there are no effective or affordable means in existence for screening against the magnetic alternating fields of such sources except to increase the distance between you and the cause and consequently pull the plug from the mains when not needed, since this is the only means to really isolate a unit from the mains, because of hidden "standby circuits" you may not know of. In contrast to the magnetic alternating field it is relatively easy to screen off or eliminate completely the electric alternating field. This can be achieved through application of special paints, metal foils or special wall plasters.

Another solution to create an electrosmog free zone within the sleeping and living area of your house is the installation of a so called mains isolating switch which can be controlled either manually or by infrared signal. To switch off the current by isolating the fuse is also practical but cumbersome. Should you decide to install such a mains isolating switch, I would recommend the use of a model which isolates two phases like the Voegele SS 16-3 or the Nefa 16 plus. You may order these switches either directly from us or through the relevant trade outlets for electrical hardware. Especially where the house wiring is of an older age, it has been proven that a two phase mains isolating switch is far more effective because such a switch does not only isolate the current but also the back flow tension and peak oscillations. Mains isolating switches, controlled by infrared, together with remote controls are for instance available from the Conrad Electronic Company. In both cases it is advisable to insert into your wall plug a special night light so as to have a permanent control that the mains isolating switch is working. Another possibility is to have all the wiring and wall plugs within the living and sleeping areas of your house screened and the wires inside the conduit pipes spun twisted. If the additional cost to you for such work is of no importance you may have the whole house done this way.

High frequency

Beside the frequencies discussed above occurring alongside railways and near household currents (16 2/3 Hz and 50 Hz, respectively) there are further higher frequency kinds of fields which can be found as high peak oscillations within the normal house installations such as radio waves (radio, television, CB-transmission, etc.) and as micro waves radiated from the cooker, wireless telephones and cellular telephones. Several implements like light dimmers, from which one would not suspect any emission, give off high frequency radiation.

There is one thing one should not forget that in the meantime there is hardly any place where you are not exposed to electrosmog. Wherever your cellular telephone and your wireless telephone are in operation, where there are antennas and other technical installations you can be sure that you are subjected to high frequency electrosmog radiation.

The effect of these waves seem, if they have a low frequency pulse, to be much stronger than the ones of classical analogue pulse systems. Such waves are radiated by cellular telephones in the D net and E net as well as some wireless household telephones.

Research has shown that EEG-values (brain current measurements) show strange wave patterns even after a long time has passed since using a cellular telephone last. Hereby it is irrelevant if you or your neighbour has been using such a cellular telephone.

Aspects

Because of the ever increasing contamination of the environment, caused by electrosmog, and the legislation, which does everything to protect the interest of certain lobbies, sponsored by big industrial enterprises, who do what they want, we have no choice but to create our own zones of low radiation with a minimum of technical equipment to achieve protection for our bodies during relaxation and sleep periods. As already mentioned above, these zones are our bedrooms and living rooms, which should receive top priority in our efforts to optimise protection against the burden of eloctrosmog. Neither radio alarm clocks, TV sets, telephones of any kind nor any technical implements should have a place in these areas. Aluminium foils (used as steam barriers), mirrors as well as beds made of metal tubing and mattresses containing steel springs should also be removed because of their antenna effect.

Should it be that you cannot dispense with or be unable to do away with all the above mentioned, such as an electrical bed adjustment, air-conditioners or alarm devices, the actual radiation of all these implements should be measured to find the real load values and to be able to arrive at alternative solutions to protect yourself as much as possible.

Even though every expert opinion has critics and different interpretations or that another expert opinion will say exactly the opposite, prevention is still better than waiting till the damage has already occurred or that the legislation of our Government will at last decide on, and consistently enforce laws which have already existed in other countries exist for a long time already.

For instance the permitted maximum radiation values for micro wave ovens in the former USSR are much lower than here, PC - monitors sold in Sweden are subjected to much more stringent radiation rules (MPR-III), and the building of schools or kindergartens below high tension lines has been against the law in other countries for a long time already (in our country it is only a recommendation and not a law).

Electromagnetic compatibility concerning the environment

The broadcasting-company RAS is conscious how serious the matter of the electromagnetic compatibility concerning the environment is. Fear of unperceptible and unvisible effects of rays on people, better known as "electrosmog", grows and grows. Different discomnforts and illnesses are often attributed to the electromagnetic fields through the power-supply or the radiowaves. In this sense living rooms with free-voltage switching become more and more modern (bioinstallation). There is no doubt that electromagnetic fields exercise an influence on human body.

Ray-treatment in different frequency-range for different disabilities or x-rays can help, but also harm. Several studies have researched as far as the power of such fields is dangerous or harmless. In spite of intensive research it has not been possible to define a clear line. Specialized literature mentions a multitude of results of which you can draw contradicting conclusions. It is due to this contradictory fact, that it is so difficult to judge how far electromagnetic rays are noxious. Also the influence of different factors of our environment, as for example air-pollution and stress, could not be excluded and delimitated in long-term studies. Science couldn’t so give a sure answer to the question about the relation between the "electrosmog" and the human health. It would be important to know, that above a certain threshold physical disturbs appear with calculable certainity and below it not. People should only act according to this factors to take andvantages of the wireless communication without discomforts.

An area which is very much associated with this theme is the one of the psychology. In cases where the psychological component prevails, an objective consideration of the given problem is unpossible. Suddenly the bare presence of a transmitting-tower in the vicinity causes discomfort, making no difference if it transmits or not. In some cases this discomfort can aggravate to a sickness.

The mobile phone: friend or foe?

Three out of five Europeans use their mobile phones every day. The question is: Are the electromagnetic waves emitted by these phones and their base stations harmful to health? There is no scientific evidence to confirm this but, true to the principle of 'better safe than sorry', a number of research projects are now trying to confirm that they are hazard-free.

Without knowing or noticing it, we have long been immersed in a veritable electrosmog covering a very wide frequency spectrum. These emissions come from televisions, microwave ovens and electric shavers as well as surveillance systems, computers or, quite simply, the electricity grid. More recently, an increasingly constant companion has been making its contribution to the electrosmog: the mobile telephone.

Does constant and increasing exposure to this kind of radiation constitute a danger? No, the experts have always claimed, as the intensities of these fields are far too low to raise the temperature of human body organs - and below this level no harmful effect has ever been shown. Mobile or cell phones, for example, emit only very weak microwave radiation (less than 2 watts). However, unlike other devices, they create an electromagnetic field in the immediate vicinity of the ear and brain.

What are the biological effects?

Initial suspicions mainly concerned the carcinogenic potential of microwaves. However, the many research projects on the subject have to date provided no evidence of any link between normal exposure to the radiation emitted in radiofrequencies by mobile phones and the appearance of malignant tumours.(1)

But cancer is not the only health risk evoked in connection with mobile phones. In France, the recent Zmirou report(2) stresses that 'scientific data indicate in a way which it is difficult to dispute the existence of varied biological effects (electroencephalogram profile, reaction time) for energy levels which do not cause an increase in local temperature', without being able to conclude that this poses any threat to health. Various symptoms - memory or attention problems, tiredness, headaches, hearing problems - are sometimes reported. In some individuals these seem to correspond to a kind of 'electromagnetic hypersensitivity' attributable to the intense use of mobile phones or proximity to the transmitter masts which serve as their base stations.

Targeting ultra-low frequencies

In another scientific report commissioned by the European Parliament,(3) Dr Gerard Hyland of the Department of Physics at Warwick University concludes that European recommendations do not go far enough as they are based solely on the thermal influences of electromagnetic fields. He believes that brain activity and the neuroendocrine system could also be adversely affected by the pulsed microwave signals emitted by mobile phones.

A number of studies are now looking at this largely unexplored field of pulsed radiation. Emitted at extremely low frequencies, it is produced by televisions and high-tension lines as well as mobile phones. Scientists are wondering if these waves could have an effect on the electromagnetic field (generated by the movement of calcium, magnesium and other ions) of our own body. In which case, when exceeding a certain level of intensity could this phenomenon increase the probability of child leukaemias? The World Health Organisation (WHO) opts for prudence in recommending that pulsed radiation should be considered as potentially carcinogenic for very young individuals and advocates further research.

Reference system required

'Everybody accepts that at high levels there is a very real and perhaps serious biological effect. But at very low levels there is, as yet, no evidence at all of harmful effects. However, this does not remove a degree of uncertainty as, if there are effects, their incidence is very low and very difficult to distinguish from other factors. To obtain the sufficient resolution to detect these effects requires large-scale epidemiological studies, such as the Interphone project which meets these requirements,' explains Laurent Bontoux, expert at the Commission's Joint Research Centre (JCR). The Union is currently financing a number of research projects in this field(4), but they are relatively recent and must be continued in the long term before their results can be usefully evaluated. The results of the vast Interphone epidemiological study are the most eagerly awaited.

To complement these European research projects, the JCR is trying to create a scientific and technological reference system as a means of quantifying the radiation emitted by mobile phones and their base stations, so that scientists will at least be speaking the same language. 'The majority of the research participants will be getting together to define common standards with which to measure exposure to this kind of radiation,' continues Laurent Bontoux. 'This is an absolute precondition for an increasingly in-depth evaluation of health risks.'
