Reishi - King of Health Foods
What is Reishi?
Diseases in many countries have been cured by herbs, minerals and so on for thousands of years. India has its own highly sophisticated indigenous medical system as also do China and Japan . The mushroom known as 'Lingzhi' in Chinese, 'Mannentake' or 'Reishi' in Japanese and 'Young Zhi' in Korean, ranks amongst the few highly prized herbs in the world. It has been used as the "Mushroom of Immortality" for thousands of years. Botanically it is known as Ganoderma Lucidum. There are 38,000 varieties of mushrooms in the world. These constitute a higher order organism in the world of fungus. Of these only 2000 varieties of mushrooms are edible. Only 200 or so mushrooms possess medicinal properties. From amongst these, six varieties of red Ganoderma or Reishi, possess the power to heal and prevent diseases.
It is classified as the supreme amongst herbs in the earliest Chinese pharmacopoeia compiled around 500 B. C. Emperors have considered Reishi to be the herb granting immortality. It is more highly esteemed than Ginseng which is unable to detoxify cells.
There now exists 30 years of substantial modern scientific research conducted in Japan, Taiwan, China, USA, Canada, Poland and elsewhere, in vivo and in vitro substantiating its efficacy. Reports, results and findings may be found in prestigious medical research journals and are also available on the net.
It is a powerful anti-oxidant which is highly efficacious for both the prevention & cure of various diseases. It Is suitable for daily use as a health restorative having been acknowledged as such throughout the world. The Food & Drug Administration, FDA , USA , has categorised Reishi as a 'dietary supplement'. In India it is now officially categorised as an ayurvedic proprietary medicine.
ALTERNATIVE THERAPY
In an age when conventional allopathic medicine does not provide the necessary answers or solutions to health related queries and the threat of potential side effects, more and more people are turning to alternative medicine in search of good health.
It has been estimated that world wide only 10 to 30 percent of all healthcare is provided by traditional or conventional medical care. The balance (70 to 90 percent) of care is provided through various practices, which fall into the broad category of alternative or complementary medicine.
The World Health Organization has estimated that over 80% of the world's population are presently using some form of alternative medicine as a part of their everyday primary healthcare.
But what exactly is Alternative Medicine?
Alternative Medicine is an overall term that covers a very wide range of therapies and treatments that have historically not been provided by medical doctors and hospitals. Unlike traditional medicine, which tends to treat illness and the symptoms of illness primarily through drugs and surgery, alternative medicine believes that your own body has the ability to heal itself. Healing from within can often be accomplished without the use of drugs or surgery. Treatments are designed to activate and stimulate the body's natural healing capabilities.
This holistic approach looks for the root cause of the problem within the body and considers the whole person, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Your mind is a part of the total treatment. Most alternative medicine practices treat the mind and body as one.
Alternative medicine and therapies include, but are not limited to the following disciplines: Ayurveda, folk medicine, herbal medicine, diets, homeopathy, faith healing, new age healing, chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage, music therapy etc.
Reishi is the best solution for all health problems.
The introduction of Reishi in India has created a distinct paradigm shift in the concept of lifestyle management. It is a simplified approach in that the cause of disease is reduced to the fundamental parameters of the existence of toxins in the body and imbalance in its various systems. Through the use of Reishi normal body functions are activated and restored. These processes may be subsumed under the six parameters of detoxification, regeneration, balancing, enhancing metabolic functions, boosting the auto immune system and regulating the endocrine system. An individual is thus empowered to take care of one's ownself on a regular basis. This process is not disruptive to one's lifestyle. It works out to be far more economical in the long run as the occurrence of disease is prevented. For those who are suffering from any disorder, Reishi enables the body to return to normalcy without recourse to doctors and expensive and complex medical procedures.
A new term was coined c 1942 -- Adaptogen. This is a substance which is non-toxic, non-site specific, and has a balancing and normalizing effect on the whole body in various ways. Reishi fulfills each of these criteria.
Reishi is an unique nutrient, containing all the essential 18 amino acids, various vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It regulates the immune system of the human body stimulating it to constantly create healthy cells increasing longevity.
Dr. Deepak Chopra in Ageless Body Timeless Mind states that the entire body is consistently in flux renewing itself completely every 2.5 yrs. One's stomach lining is renewed every five days, liver every month, skeleton every three months and so on.
Reishi penetrates human cells and expels the toxins accumulated in them, rejuvenating them. Reishi purifies the blood, making it slightly alkaline and increasing its oxygen content. It nurtures the production of red and white blood corpuscles in the blood. Thus it enhances resistance to disease. Reishi thus enables the human body, suffering from acute, chronic and terminal illnesses to effectively heal itself. The healthy are empowered to ward off dis-ease.
This is so as the human body is its own best doctor. It automatically carries healing compounds to the required cells which are treated and restored to health. An environment is created which invading bacteria and virus do not find conducive to their existence -- they simply leave! Moreover unhealthy cell growth is gradually stopped. Thus individual organs and the entire system is healed over a period of time. It is not possible to cure overnight a disease which has been nurtured over the years!
People are becoming increasingly aware that they are involuntarily compelled to ingest toxins through the air, water, grains, fruits and vegetables. This has emerged as a contemporary and highly pertinent issue in India. Reishi is the herb par excellence for removing involuntarily ingested toxins from the body. Taken regularly it ensures that toxins are flushed out of the system every day rather than being stored in the body to cause chaos later on.
Reishi is highly effective for treating Chemically Induced Diseases to which modern medicine has no answer. These are caused by pollution and adulterated & contaminated food and drink -- heavy metals, pesticides, chemical fertilisers and common sugar high in sulphur content.
Reishi is ideal during adolescence, puberty, pregnancies & lactation. Hormonal secretions are balanced controlling morning sickness, mood swings, cravings &c associated with pregnancies. The foetus is provided the nourishment it requires for a healthy growth and delivery is facilitated. Lactating mothers are enabled to pass on the goodness of Reishi to their children ensuring a balanced growth. Post partum recovery is also facilitated in every way.
Reishi is a proven antidote to cancer. It relieves symptoms of insomnia. It is highly efficacious against allergies. It metabolises excess fats controlling obesity. It enables those underweight to revert to normal health.
Reishi counteracts Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, little understood by modern medicine. It is highly efficacious in treating liver problems particularly Hepatitis A, B & C, where the harmful virus are simply expelled by the body. It normalises both low and high blood pressure, inducing a sense of well-being, and is highly beneficial in all types of heart diseases.
Reishi is efficacious in rheumatism and joint pains. It is efficacious in the treatment of sciatica and other nerve related diseases.
Reishi should be taken half an hour before food except in the case of gastric problems. A daily intake of Vitamin C in equal proportion to Reishi, seems to facilitate its proper metabolisation and assimilation. Potassium Vit C is recommended in cases where sodium is contra-indicated. Those suffering from gastric problems may find it necessary to take Reishi an hour or so after food.

Why is Reishi so special?
Wild Reishi is extremely rare. Only one or two Reishi mushrooms may be found on a hillside. Although the fruit body, mycelium and spores of wild Reishi are all efficacious in treating diseases, in the past large quantities of Reishi had to be used to derive minimal benefits. As it was impossible to cultivate it, it was available only to emperors. Tradition maintains that the first emperor of China, Shih Huang Ti, sent a fleet with 250 young men and 250 young ladies to Japan in search of the 'hero of longevity' -- Reishi.
The quality of wild Reishi is also unpredictable. Only the fruit body can be harvested and that too, when the active ingredients have already diminished due to the vagaries of the weather, attack by insects and so on. Wild Reishi does not contain the potency of fresh mushrooms. On maturing the fruit body is hardened by fibers. This makes it more difficult for the body to extract and digest the active ingredients.
Its spores are microscopic, similar in size to bacteria. They are protected by two layers of hardened cell walls. These cell walls trap the active ingredients inside and are indigestible. Moreover, when buying wild Reishi, expertise is required in order not to confuse Reishi with the hundreds of other mushrooms, some of which are poisonous.
Reishi was earlier classified by color into 6 types: Red, Green, White, Black, Yellow, Purple. In 1972, researchers at Kyoto University in Japan successfully cultivated Reishi in the laboratory for the first time using 'spore separation'. From a single species, Ganoderma Lucidum -- Red Reishi. All six colours could be grown by varying the temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide content, and the available nutrients. The six types of Reishi are thus shown to be one single species. Now 'tissue culture' has become the accepted norm as it ensures consistency of harvests.
Reishi belongs to the Poly pore group. "Poly pores, commonly known as bracket or shelf fungi, are conspicuous mushrooms that grow off the sides of trees. On a walk through the forest one can commonly see many such bracket mushrooms."
"What is not readily visible to us however is the actual mushroom organism, or mycelium. Just as an apple is the fruit of an apple tree, so too is a mushroom the fruit body of a mycelial 'tree'. Mycelium is a network of threadlike filaments that originates from spores. The mycelium spreads throughout the nutrient base or substance, amassing nutrients as it grows. As long as environmental conditions are right, the mycelium will continue to grow and propagate until it exhausts the available nutrients."
"As long as nutrients are available, the mycelium can be considered perennial and will live for many years. At least once a year, mushrooms emerge from the mycelial network. As the reproductive organ of the fungus, mushrooms are the means by which spores are created and spread." -- excerpted from Reishi Mushroom : Herb of Spiritual Potency and Medical Wonder, by Terry Willard, Sylvan Press, 1991.
An excellent article about Reishi appeared in Health Foods Business Jan 1992: "Rei-shi: Ancient Medicine is Modern Hope" by Linda McGlasson, Assistant Editor. Life Positive, published from New Delhi, also carries an illuminating article on Reishi in its Nov 01 issue.
The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals & Herbs published by Reader's Digest carries an article on Reishi as also do various other modern self-help books on health. Clearly it has now been acclaimed as an excellent health restorative the world over.
Modern bio-engineering technology has succeeded Reishi has been available in health stores in Japan in making Reishi available to all. The quality of the mushrooms harvested can be carefully controlled by providing the best conditions and proper nutrients during cultivation. The harvesting and extraction processes can be timed at the precise stage when the mycelium contains the maximum amount of active ingredients.
Further investigations have discovered that the largest amount of active ingredients exist in the mycelium, and that the mycelium is more easily digested. Fresh mycelium is available, and there is no chance for mistaken identity. Without the obstacles of the fibers, the extraction is more complete and the extract is more digestible. Hence latest research on the medicinal properties of Reishi is being carried out on mycelial extracts. A technology has also been evolved to crack open the spores so that its nutrients may be metabolised.
Reishi in its pure and powdered form is now available as capsules. The fruit portion is available as Reishi Gano [RG] whilst the mycelium as Ganocelium [GL]. The use of capsules makes it possible to avoid its bitter taste, standardize dosage and make it readily available. The capsule casing available in India is purely vegetarian.
Moreover, toothpaste, coffee, tea, chocolate, soaps, oil, shampoo and so on are also being manufactured using Reishi. Tea is itself an excellent antioxidant. Combined with Reishi its harmful qualities are negated. The chocolate drink is made from pure cocoa powder -- a rarity in India. Similarly the coffee contains pure coffee conforming to international standards which again is in India.
Reishi toothpaste or Lingzhi, is a multiple use product which may be used as a cream, antiseptic ointment, made into a drink to counteract stomach aches and of course used as a toothpaste for the cure of bleeding gums, pyorrhea and so on. The soap kills the bacteria which thrive on the skin particularly in moist areas, thus removing body odours. Moreover it keeps the skin soft. It's also efficacious in the treatment of various skin diseases. Gano oil too has multiple applications. It helps alleviate joint pains and is useful in paralysis. Used as a general massage for children, it helps the development of their bones. The oil is non-sticky and may be used any time during the day. Some have even found their hair regenerated. The shampoo used regularly, nurtures the hair and retards hair loss.
Reishi is cultivated under strictly controlled organic conditions by DXN in Malaysia since 1993. After harvesting, it is immediately freeze dried and processed into powder, made into capsules and so on using ultra modern techniques. Thus its natural properties are preserved. It is certified both by local and international authorities. The company has also developed its own technique of cracking open reishi spores, making their goodness available.
A similar organic processing plant has been established in Pondicherry June 2002. RG & GL powder is directly imported from Malaysian, blended with the powder of Shiitake, another medicinal mushroom. It is then made into capsules using vegetarian capsule shells. Reishi Tea is also prepared there. Tea being in itself a powerful anti-oxidant, its action is enhanced by blending with Reishi. The harmful effects of tea are also neutralised. Moreover, a cup or two a day can also serve as a maintenance dose in lieu of the capsules. Soon the company intends to make available Reishi sweets and chocolate in the country.
Reishi has been available in health stores in Japan and various countries in the west for nearly three decades now. It is also legally mandatory for cancer treatment there to include Reishi as a supplement. People there, increasingly health conscious, are invariably turning to the wisdom of the east for better lifestyle management. It has now been accepted through the world as a remarkable health restorative. The famous Tata Memorial Cancer Research Institute, Mumbai and the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, Kerala have reportedly started trials with Reishi. Similarly AIIMS in New Delhi also has many doctors who are working with it. A recent report in The Telegraph from Kolkata, Sep 1, 03, refers to Reishi growing in the wild on certain trees in southern India. Company Stockpoints have recently been opened in the Middle East, Europe, North America, Australia & New Zealand, SE Asia, making Reishi a globally accepted supplement.
