Killing Laden will inspire more:
The Asian Age, Mumbai, April 2, 2006
London, April 1: The Dalai Lama said that were Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden killed that hatred would cause another 10 like him to spring up, in an interview to a British newspaper published on Saturday.
The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader told The Daily Telegraph that terrorists should be treated humanely
He also revealed the workings of his relationship with US President George W. Bush, said Westerners had become too self-absorbed and repeated his opposition to homosexuality in a wide ranging interview.
The Dalai Lama said modern terrorism was born out of jealousy of Western lifestyles.
"Fundamentalism is terrifying because it is based purely on emotion, rather than intelligence," the 70 year-old monk said at the seat of his government-in-exile in Dharmasala
"It prevents followers from thinking as individuals and about the good of the world." "This new terrorism has been brewing for many years. Much of it is caused by jealousy and frustration at the West because it looks so highly developed and successful on television. Leaders in the East use religion to counter that, to bind these countries together," the Dalai Lama said
Terrorists, he warned, must be treated lhumanely. "Otherwise, the problem will escalate. If there is one bin Laden killed today, soon there will be 10 bin Ladens. Awesome. Ten bin Ladens killed, the hatred is spread; 100 bombed, and 1,000 lose members of their families," he said.
Although he appeared not to approve of the war in Iraq, he was admiring of Bush.
"He is very straightforward," said the monk.
"One our first visit, I was faced with a large plate of biscuits. President Bush immediately offered me his favouritse, and after that, we got on fine. On my next visit, he didn't mind when I was blunt about the war. By my third visit, I was ushering him into the Oval Office. I was astonished by his grasp of Buddhism," said the Dalai Lama. (AFP)
It is fascinating that Mr. M. J. Akbar would have this published shortly after my allegations that the Taala'i Lama was integral to the hijacking of IC 814 Dec 15, 1999 from Kathmandu to Kandahar posted on www.blogger.com. Mr. Akbar apparently sees in him the reflection of the Prophet Mohammed, may peace be upon him, and the religious wars he fought.
The Taala'i Lama in this interveiw yet again demonstrates his mastery of ellipticism. It is evident that he has read my article accusing him and feels constrained to respond to it. Yet he does it in a highly subtle and sophisticated way by deflecting from the accusation. He does not admit to his involvement in IC 814 nor does he deny it. The least he could do would be to take me to court for libel. Even this he has not done until now, this in spite of my campaign against him since 1997, as he knows that he has far too many skeletons hidden in his cupboard which would tumble out in the event of such a suit. Moreover it would make a possible hero of a Kagyu-Nyingma Indian Buddhist -- anathema to the Gelugpa dispensation!
Xenophobia is clearly a key factor behind fundamentalism, one which the Taala'i Lama has himself experienced directly both in the Potala and later in exile. His avid Tibetan followers too are jealous of the west, tolerated merely because of the greenbacks. They too are swayed by emotion rather than reason. Mr. Akbar should interview Richard Gere, Jeffrey Hopkins and other international devotees of this Nobel Laureate ascertain this.
As far as homosexuality is concerned, it is God's own truth that he has indulged himself in it while in the Potala and certainly in exile. His monasteries are hotbeds of child abuse which the Govt of India has now woken up to and is ready to restrain through the enactment of The Atrocities Against Children Act 2006.
What is the most sinister is that the Taala'i Lama himself has been responsible for the assassination of Gungthang Tsultrim in Dehra Doon 1976 and HE Jamgon Rinpoche, Siliguri April 1992. The attack on the Karmapa Internationa Buddhist Institute by his supporters March 94 or 95, video recorded, is its own testimony of the terror tactics employed by this Nobel Peace Laureate.
Similarly in the mid seventies he had declared bounties for the murder of Their Holiness the XVIth Gyalwang Karmapa, Dudjom Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Penor Rinpoche and many others.
The Karmapa Controversy too is his personal brain child in which he has proclaimed a person mediaclly 10 years older than Ugen Trinlay Dorjee as the XVIIth Karmapa.
Surely Mr. Akbar, being as well informed he is, would know that the purported Govt of Tibet in Exile is a wholly illegal entity devoid of any constitutional status under Indian and international laws. Yet he prefers to keep a Nelson's eye on this matter.
What is clearly evident from the above report, is that the Taala'i Lama has been sharing a cosy rapport with successive Presidents of the USA ever since General Dwight Eisenhower, not that there ever existed any doubt on this issue. However, this is perhaps one of the few times that the Taala'i Lama has openly talked about it.
Mr. Akbar, whose newspaper is devoutly anti-US except for this issue, would do well to depute Seema Mustafa to conduct an impartial and intelligent investigation into the above and boldly have the results of his investigation published rather than worship the Taala'i Lama blindly as the modern 'messenger of God'.
After all it is his own mentor who states above:
"Fundamentalism is terrifying because it is based purely on emotion, rather than intelligence."
